When Drivers Ask AI "Who Should Fix My Car?", Does Your Shop Come Up?
After a fender bender, more drivers ask AI for a body shop than ever. Here's how auto body shops get recommended by ChatGPT and Google's AI.
Someone backs into a pole in a parking lot. Before they call their insurer, a lot of them now do something new. They ask AI. "Best auto body shop near me," or "who can fix my bumper in my city?" The AI hands back a couple of names. The shop it names gets the call. The rest do not.
Why this is winnable
"Best auto body shop near me" is exactly the kind of question AI answers from a thin, shifting set of sources. There is no single dominant authority the way there is for "best running shoes." That is good news, because a single well-run local shop can become the recommended one.
How the engines pick a shop
- ChatGPT leans on directory profiles as a source card for each shop, plus your own website. It also runs largely on Bing.
- Google's AI and Gemini read your Business Profile, your reviews, and cross-reference you across the wider web before committing.
- Across all of them, the thing they searched for most was reviews and reputation.
What to do
- Claim and complete your Google Business Profile, including photos of real repairs.
- Claim profiles on the directories AI trusts for auto body, with accurate ratings, review counts, and contact details.
- Build reviews and reply to them. Collision customers read these closely, and so does AI.
- Make your website answer real questions in plain text: insurance, timelines, warranties, and certifications.
- Make sure you are indexed in Bing, not just Google.
Drivers are already asking. The only question is whether your shop is the answer.
